Ammonia Emission Control Drives New Interest in Calcium-to-Ammonia Conversion

Time : 2026-10-13

As environmental regulations continue to evolve, industrial companies are paying increasing attention to ammonia emissions from flue gas treatment systems. The introduction of stricter ammonia escape control requirements is changing the way operators evaluate traditional desulfurization and denitrification technologies.

For many power and industrial plants, the challenge has become more complex: reducing NOx emissions while controlling ammonia slip from selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems.

MingSheng Environmental Protection is addressing this challenge through calcium-to-ammonia conversion technology, which upgrades traditional limestone-based flue gas desulfurization systems into ammonia-based desulfurization systems.

Unlike conventional calcium desulfurization, ammonia desulfurization uses ammonia as the absorbent to remove sulfur dioxide and produce ammonium sulfate as a valuable by-product. The technology enables closer integration between desulfurization and denitrification by sharing an ammonia supply system.

MingSheng has developed advanced ammonia desulfurization solutions, including its cascade separation and purification technology. Through multi-stage ammonia and ammonium salt washing and demisting processes, the system helps reduce ammonia and ammonium salt emissions during operation.

The company’s seventh-generation technology has been applied in industrial projects, achieving high sulfur dioxide removal efficiency while maintaining stable ammonia recovery performance.

For existing plants operating limestone-gypsum FGD systems, calcium-to-ammonia conversion provides an upgrade pathway without necessarily replacing the entire system. Existing structures and equipment can be evaluated for reuse, while modifications focus on key areas such as absorption sections, oxidation systems, ammonia facilities, and by-product recovery units.

As industrial operators face increasing pressure from emission compliance, carbon management, and operating costs, calcium-to-ammonia conversion offers a new approach: transforming flue gas treatment from a compliance burden into a resource recovery opportunity.
